Dinner by Heston Blumenthal set to open at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Heston Blumenthal of Fat Duck fame has joined forces with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group to launch Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London. Like Blumenthal’s signature restaurant, The Fat Duck in the village of Bray in Berkshire, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will focus on the “revival and modernization” of traditional British recipes. Dishes to look out for include scallops with cucumber ketchup and peas; bergamot cured mackerel salad; and slow-cooked short rib of beef. Dinner by Heston Blumenthal will be the chef’s first restaurant in London, and Mandarin Oriental and Blumenthal are sparing no expense to ensure that it lives up to the reputation of three Michelin starred The Fat Duck.
Designer Adam D. Tihany is working on the interiors; a contemporary British brasserie concept inspired by Blumenthal’s passion for 16th century cooking and the use of local ingredients. Tihany plans to highlight rich, natural materials such as wood, leather and iron - historical elements at the root of 16th century British style - incorporating them in contemporary ways to reinforce Heston's revival and modernization of traditional British recipes. The new restaurant, which opens in December 2010, will feature floor to ceiling windows looking out over Hyde Park, an open kitchen, private dining room for 12 guests, chef’s table for six in the kitchen and a chrome and steel pulley mechanism modelled after the 16th century pulley system originally designed for the Royal British Court's kitchens.
