Fit for a Greek god - the Acropolis will soon be available to rent
Rent the Acropolis for the day
Due to Greece’s ongoing economic woes, the country has decided to rent out its most prized archaeological sites, including the Acropolis, for commercial ventures. Greece’s ministry of culture announced that the sites would be available for private hire for as little as US$1,600 a day. It is unclear what constitutes a commercial venture – some reports have stated even demonstrators will be allowed to hire the sites as long as they have the cash. Greece’s historical sites have notoriously been very difficult to gain private access to and have been under the responsibility of the Central Council of Archaeology. However the current economic climate has forced Greece to re-think its stance on the national treasures to generate extra income for the struggling country. Although the ministry plans to enforce strict conditions on those wanting to rent the sites, archaeologists fear the scheme may cause irreparable damage to the country’s most prize possessions.
