Peruvian fine dining restaurant Central has been named the S. Pellegrino Best Restaurant in Latin America at an annual awards ceremony celebrating the region’s 50 best culinary hotspots.
Held in Lima, Peru, and organised by the people behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, the event saw the crème de la crème of Latin America’s fine dining scene gather for the awards, which included naming the best restaurants in Brazil, Chile and Peru.
The most coveted prize, that of Best Restaurant in Latin America, went to Lima-based Central, a respected Peruvian eatery headed by chef Virgilio Martínez that serves traditional Andean ingredients with a creative gastronomic twist.
Another leading Peruvian restaurant, Astrid y Gastón, claimed second place, while São Paulo-based D.O.M came in third.
“Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants is based on the opinions of over 250 members of the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy,” said William Drew, group editor for Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants.
“The challenge to Latin American restaurants is great: the restaurants in this list will attract attention from across the world,” he continued.
Earlier this year, Central was ranked 15th in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, but has quickly risen through the Latin American ranks to claim the top spot.
