Private rental firm Airbnb is offering the chance to follow in the footsteps – or ski tracks – of winter sports legends. This lofty lodge is stationed north of Norway’s capital in Holmenkollen, an arena that has hosted the world’s greatest ski jump daredevils.
Anyone lucky enough to win the chance to stay at the top of the ski jump will be treated to a fully furnished penthouse – in the exact spot where competitors launch themselves down the run.
The apartment’s floor to ceiling windows give one of the best views of Oslo, snow-capped mountains and endless forest, according to the online listing. The apartment also boasts the highest roof terrace in town, so guests can enjoy some serious stargazing while dinner is served – and there’s even a chance to see the Northern Lights.
On the first floor, 250 steps below the apartment, visitors can find a comprehensive ski museum packed with 4,000 years of ski history, and can learn about the adventures of polar explorers, including legendary pioneer Roald Amundsen.
Guests can also enjoy the surrounding area by donning a pair of cross-country skis to make the most of the 1,500 kilometres of fresh tracks right on the doorstep. For speedier transit there’s also the Oslo Vinterpark ski resort and Norway's most intense toboggan run, 'The Corkscrew', just around the corner.
Following the overnight stay, breakfast will be served in the VIP lounge, which happens to be accessible by zip line - a nifty alternative to getting your morning jolt from an espresso.
Applications must be made by March 16 and winners will be selected on the same day. All you need to do is explain in 100 words or less why you and your guest deserve to stay - they’ll even fly the winners in from anywhere in the world.
The rules (according to Airbnb):
• Please do not apply if you are scared of heights
• Only pros are allowed to use the ski jump so don't think you're going to be pulling any tricks on your toboggan
• Spandex outfits are encouraged, but not mandatory
• No smoking. Top athletes have to breathe this air too
• We’ll provide all the food and drink you need, so leave the thermos and sandwiches at home
• Although the Olympics saw 120,000 people packed in and around the jump, only 1 additional guest is allowed in the apartment
• The stay will not be commentated on, and no style-points will be issued
• There are no neighbours. So if you feel like walking around in your tighty whities, be our guests
