Swiss inventor Andreas Reinhard has installed a 40-metre art installation-cum-pop up bar in the frozen lake adjacent to St. Moritz.
The unveiling of the U-boat-esque bar was accompanied by sirens wailing across exclusive Swiss resort early yesterday morning. To onlookers it appeared as thought a submarine had broken through the icy surface of the lake.
Reinhard, who in 1994 created the first upside-down hot-air balloon, coordinated the project with Engadin-St.Moritz, White Turf and the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz last autumn.
The bar is already serving sake, champagne and sushi from the Michelin-starred Ryokan Hasenberg in nearby Widen.
The ‘sub’ measures 40 metres in length and is 9 metres high by 4 metres across and was constructed by a team of 13 over a two-week period in a Zurich warehouse. It was constructed and transported in secrecy before being installed overnight, in order to surprise local residents.
The Kulm submarine is part of St. Moritz’s famous White Turf festival, with horse races taking place on the frozen ice of Lake St. Moritz over three separate weekends in February (the Sundays of 9, 16 and 23).
It will be open daily until February 23, from 10am to 4pm.
