It’s tough to beat the American Northeast’s autumnal beauty, a sight – and charming experience – that Viceroy New York is embracing with a new “Apple Picking & Picnic Package”.
A tradition that began in the 1800s, farms in New York and New Jersey open their orchards every autumn for those looking to celebrate the region’s dramatic change of season while harvesting fruit that has spent the summer ripening to excellence. A short journey – but world away – from the Big Apple’s crowded streets, Viceroy now whisks guests away in a private car to embark on their own apple-picking experience.
Guests – wise to pack their cosiest cashmere wrap or jumper – are soon surrounded by a countryside bursting into rich autumn colour, and enjoying a pastime that has delighted New Yorkers for well over a century.
Under a secluded apple tree, a gourmet picnic is proffered with cheeses, charcuterie, homemade pâté, breads, truffle honey, a Chef’s Fall Salad, an abundance of tempting desserts and a bottle of local Wolfer Estate Cabernet Franc. After which, a chessboard is kept on hand for a friendly game and post-lunch relaxation.
Back in the city, the apples picked are turned into traditional apple butter by the chefs at Kingside, the hotel’s new-American restaurant, and returned to the guests in a 10 oz (295 ml), personalised and NY-branded mason jar.
The package, available through November 1, also includes breakfast at Kingside restaurant, complimentary hot toddies at The Roof lounge and terrace, and overnight accommodation in one of the hotel’s luxe, boutique-inspired rooms.
