Utah’s Deer Valley is one of the most acclaimed ski resorts in the US, an exclusive enclave where stylish boutique hotels and upmarket restaurants provide a home from home for avid skiers and scenesters alike. One of the resort’s most iconic hotels, Goldener Hirsch, has reopened after a major renovation and expansion, and started a new life as part of the Auberge Resorts Collection.
Designed in the style of an Austrian ski chalet, the hotel was built in 1992 by the philanthropic Eccles family, who have been part of the development of the Utah’s ski industry for more than 100 years. Following the revamp, the 18 rooms within the original inn are now joined by 40 modern residences in two new buildings designed by California-based architect Tom Kundig.
While the original inn retains its European alpine charm, with ornately carved wooden furniture, artwork from the Eccles family’s private collection and wood-burning fireplaces in each of the 18 rooms, the new residences offer a decidedly more contemporary experience.
Each features floor-to-ceiling windows and furnished balconies overlooking the awe-inspiring mountains of the Wasatch Range, with custom furniture and spacious living areas fitted out by Las Vegas-based designer Todd-Avery Lenahan, whose portfolio includes a collection of Four Seasons hotels across the US and Caribbean.
Ranging from studios to three-bedroom hideaways for the whole family, each of the residences features a full kitchen outfitted with appliances by Sub-Zero and Wolf, gas fireplaces in the living rooms and master bedrooms, and deep soaking bathtubs.
The new buildings cut a striking figure next to the old-world style of the original inn, which is seamlessly connected via a glass walkway and outdoor plaza. Goldener Hirsch is also home to a rooftop fitness centre, infinity pool and hot tub, a lively après-ski lounge and an award-winning restaurant serving Bavarian fare made with farm-fresh regional produce.
