The Riviera Maya is dotted with remote escapes and rejuvenating retreats, but few are as exclusive as Maroma, Belmond's Mexican beachfront hideaway. Set on the edge of the Caribbean in 200 acres of coastal jungle, Maroma has closed its doors for a thorough make-over courtesy of London-based designer Tara Bernerd, whose little black book of former and existing clients includes brands such as Four Seasons, Rosewood and Equinox Hotels.
The resort’s 72 rooms, suites and villas will be reimagined in keeping with regional artisanal traditions, with local materials and textiles, and four dining destinations will celebrate the best of Mexican regional cuisines. A new-look indoor-outdoor spa will draw on ancient healing rituals and take inspiration from the natural environment around the resort, which overlooks one of the finest beaches in the Yucatan Peninsula. When compete in May 2023, Maroma will join Belmond’s San Miguel de Allende hotel, Casa de Sierra Nevada, to offer a two-stop escape showcasing two very different sides of Mexico.
