Once a grande dame on The Penang Coast, Penang Mutiara Beach Resort has lain empty since 2006. After years of neglect, the once radiant resort is set to reopen under an IHG flag in a couple of years, after a complete top-to-toe makeover courtesy of owner Tradewinds Corp.
When complete, InterContinental Penang will once again be the belle of evocatively named Glowing Bay, a stretch of white sand beach and crystal-clear waters on the edge of Penang National Park, on the northwest corner of the island.
As well as 355 rooms and suites ranging from one to three bedrooms, the resort will have a private enclave of six villas where families can enjoy space and privacy, and a holistic wellness village with 10 treatment villas, a yoga studio and relaxation pavilion, surrounded by ancient Angsana trees.
Just 30 minutes from the island’s capital Georgetown and a stone’s throw from local attractions including Teluk Bahang Fishing Village and the Penang Tropical Spice Garden, the resort will spearhead the drive to reaffirm Penang’s reputation as one of Malaysia’s leading travel destinations.
