American entrepreneur Kevin Wendle has embraced innovation since he purchased Hotel Esencia on the Riviera Maya six years ago, investing huge sums in turning the jungle-covered hideaway into one of Mexico’s most lauded beach escapes. The latest addition to the hotel is a collection of Rooftop Wellness Suites, which contains everything a guest could need to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle during their stay, a consideration that’s becoming increasingly popular among well-heeled, health-conscious travellers.
Occupying the top two floors of a standalone bungalow, the suites feature a master bedroom, outdoor dining terrace and their own indoor fitness studio looking out over the jungle. As well as a Technogym personal weight kit, exercise ball and yoga mat, the studios are equipped with The Mirror, a state-of-the-art virtual training screen that offers live and on-demand fitness classes and activities covering everything from cardio sessions and strength workouts, to yoga and Pilates classes and guided meditation. On request, the studio can also be fitted out with a Peloton bicycle and a TRX suspension trainer.
The wellness offerings continue in the master bathroom, where a double rain shower can be turned into an aromatherapy steam room with a choice of two essential oil aromas, enabling guests to create their own spa experience without leaving the suite. On the top floor, a spacious outdoor terrace has its own heated plunge pool, outdoor shower and solarium, plus spectacular views across the jungle canopy and the white sandy beaches of Xpu Há beyond. From US $975 per night.
