When you consider the word “sauna” is itself Finnish, referring to the traditional bath, it’s clear the practise is well and truly synonymous with Finnish culture. The nation’s three million saunas can accommodate up to 5.4 million people – roughly the same as the entire population – and there’s even a sauna chamber inside Helsinki’s parliament building. That’s why Visit Finland is inviting anyone bold enough to experience nine of the nation’s top saunas – all in one day.
The Ultimate Sauna Tour is described as the definitive test for anyone vying to be considered more Finn than their fellow sauan-goers and is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Seasoned sauna-goers that pick up the gauntlet (or in this case, their towel) will receive a rare amulet for their bravery, which is carved from ukonkivi – a white quartz crystal that’s also known as “thunderstone” in Finnish folklore.
The Finns divide sauna experiences into three categories: “slow and silent” for the meditative approach, “wild and free” to be close to nature, and “alive and strong” for a more vigorous and energising experience – which usually involves being whipped with dry branches. Showcasing the very best of the Finnish sauna, the experiences are guided by so-called Sauna Elves.
The range of guided sauna soaks is available for groups of two or more, with varying price options. The full works, with all nine saunas, is available from €670 (US$723) per person for a party of 12 and includes light bites, towels, robes and transport between venues in the aptly named Sauna Bus.
“The sauna is part of the Finnish identity and integral to our culture,” says Eva Kiviranta, communications and social media coordinator of Visit Finland. “It has been used for centuries to cleanse and heal the body, soothe the mind, and improve well-being. The sauna speeds up the heartbeat and raises the body temperature, improves breathing and circulation and stimulates the metabolism resulting in a range of health benefits.”
