Arriving in Bali for the first time, as a guest of the Bvlgari Resort, is an enchanting experience. Every little thing has already been anticipated, and as soon as guests step off the plane, dedicated representatives from the resort are there to deal with the day-to-day annoyances of immigration and luggage collection, while they are whisked off to the waiting limousine. A few minutes later, the short 45-minute journey begins, and so does the love affair with Bali itself.
The car passes field upon field of lush green palms and paddy fields, and as the fresh sea breeze steals through an open window, there’s nothing to do but relax and enjoy the scenery. Roadside souvenir sellers display their handmade furniture and soapstone statues, while the driver navigates the winding roads to the resort.
A quick security check at the gates and guests enter the secluded fortification of the Bvlgari Bali. Situated on top of a cliff, above the spectacular cascade of rustic rooftops and tropical gardens that make up the resort, the arrival pavilion is where the magical experience begins. Magnificent in its proportions, the open-air pavilion, designed by Antonio Citterio & Partners, is a minimalist signature structure, combining the harmony of contemporary Italian design and Balinese architectural tradition. The tranquil ambiance of dark grey volcanic stones, exotic woods and luxury fabrics, joined by the natural light of the sunset, the ocean breeze and welcome refreshments leave guests instantly refreshed from their journey. With 59 private villas meandering slowly down the cliff face to the sea, the Bvlgari Resort is classed as a boutique hotel, and prides itself on its impeccable service.
Each guest is appointed a personal butler on arrival. Whether guests need to call a buggy for a quick tour of the resort, reserve a table at the award-winning Il Restaranto, set up a candlelit dinner, book a blissful treatment at the resort’s ESPA spa, or arrange a round of golf at one of the five-star courses nearby, the butler is on call 24-hours-a-day.
With its own temple on site, spirituality is also a key element of any stay at the Bvlgari Resort. Charms protect the entrance to each villa, and every night guests are left a small, locally crafted gift, to ward off any negative energy or bad spirits. If the charms don’t work, there is of course the option of enjoying the extensive selection of Italian, Indonesian and seafood cuisine on offer at the resort’s restaurants. The divine stretch of the beach in front of the villas, with its dramatic cliffs plunging into the Indian ocean – only accessed via a private lift – provides the perfect backdrop to the fairy-tale tavern La Spaggia, serving a selection of freshly grilled fish and expertly mixed cocktails. The private beach club also welcomes guests until sunset. But, no Bvlgari Bali experience is complete without flying above the ‘volcano of island of the Gods’ in a helicopter; a must along with a visit to the famous Uluwatu temple.Rating: A fascinating and spiritual experience for the discerning traveller.
