The former racecar, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, was sold for EUR 3.7 million (US $5 million) at an RM Auctions event in Paris last week.
Chassis XKD 520 was originally purchased by Bob Stillwell, an Australian racing driver who raced the car in 1956 and 1957 – but the top bid came from an anonymous buyer.
The classic exterior contains a 300 bhp, 3,781 cc dual overhead-camshaft inline six-cylinder engine with three Weber 36 DCO3 carburettors, four-speed manual gearbox and disc brakes on all four wheels.
The seventh of just 54 custom D-Types produced, the list of previous owners also includes Le Mans winner Richard Attwood. The car debuted at the 1954 24 Hour of Le Mans race, where it placed second.
