According to a report from Bloomberg, an unnamed Middle Eastern buyer has parted with around $300 million for the 57-acre property that lies between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi. The most enticing feature is Europe’s only underground aquarium, but the property also includes two master suites, a grand reception room, two artisanal kitchens, an entire floor for recreational activities, as well a wine cellar, a cinema, in decadent surroundings that echo the opulence of Versaille.
Though it bears the name of a long-deceased French monarch, the property is rather more modern and took three years to complete, a work force of 200 from Living Heritage companies using centuries-old building techniques. The vast gardens include a gold-leaf fountain and were designed as an homage to Le Notre, the royal gardener under Louis XIV himself.
“The finished residence respects the heritage aesthetics and spirit of a region and a country, while celebrating the true essence of modern luxury living,” said luxury real estate developer Cogemad.
While houses have reportedly sold for much higher, Christie's claimed the previous record price for a home was a London penthouse sale for $221 million in 2011.
