Each July, legions of humpback whales make the long journey from the icy depths of Antarctica to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The teeming seas of Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago are among their favourite playgrounds, drawn by the warm climate and the protection afforded from predators. For guests at Kisawa Sanctuary, this annual migration affords the chance to witness one of the most spectacular wildlife encounters on the planet.

Situated on the southern tip of Benguerra Island, Kisawa is a 300-hectare sanctuary of coastal dunes and forest, where a collection of bungalow residences are strung out along the beach. Guests can explore the dunes in their electric Mini-Moke utility vehicle, laze around by their private pool or embark on a healing journey at the Natural Wellness Center, where thatched treatment nests provide a soothing sanctuary.

From July to October, in partnership with the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies (BCSS), Kisawa invites guests to Wonder of Whales, a once-in-a-lifetime air and seafaring adventure to witness the world’s largest mammals at play. During the course of a seven-night stay, guests will delve into the deep blue waters on a marine expedition accompanied by a scientist from BCSS, where they’ll witness first-hand the majesty of these gentle giants and their calves.

On another day, they’ll take to the skies in a blue-watching helicopter safari to spot humpbacks from the air, offering a fresh perspective on this aquatic ballet and the Bazaruto Archipelago, a sublime landscape of desert islands and towering dunes that roll down into the sapphire blue seas. When day turns to dusk and the skies take on an pastel pink blush, the otherworldly melody of whale song can be heard along the coast.

Back at Kisawa, guests are immersed in a world of modern African design that blends in with the coastal landscape; part of its committment to build bonds between people and place, life and land. Culinary experiences follow the same philosophy, with natural, local produce sourced from farmers and fishermen within 300km of Kisawa.

The experience also includes all-inclusive dining across four venues (or in-residence), use of an electric Mini-Moke and a 60-minute Mozambican healing treatment. There's unlimited snorkelling, sea kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding, a sunset dhow cruise and helicopter transfers from Vilankulo Airport. Wonder of Whales costs EUR 34,762 (US $37,200) for two guests sharing a One Bedroom Residence or EUR 84,000 ($89,900) for up to four guests in the Kisawa Residence.
