Sitting at the doorstep of the Icelandic parliament in Reykjavík, Iceland Parliament Hotel marks the debut of the first Curio Collection by Hilton property in Iceland. In line with Curio Collection’s strategy of handpicking hotels for their distinct character, the 163-room hotel is set in a complex of seven buildings, carefully reconstructed to preserve their important heritage. Surrounded by lively squares, Reykjavík Cathedral, Harpa Concert Hall, City Hall, and the harbour area, the hotel offers spectacular scenes of the northern lights in winter, and the midnight sun during the peak of summer. The location of the new hotel was once a 1900s department store, and the new building has been decorated with eclectic architecture that nods to historic times. Overseen by Freyr Frostason and Paolo Gianfrancesco of THG Architects, the hotel’s design combines local history with quirky vintage décor and modern amenities. Exposed stone walls from the original structure run through the hotel’s bathhouse and restaurant, while black and white photos of consul for Germany Ditlev Thomsen, the department store’s founder, bring an old-world touch. The lively Telebar is inspired by the HQ of Iceland Telecom and connects to the Hjá Jóni Restaurant which serves local delicacies with international flair. A highlight is the hotel’s spa area and 24-hour gym which offers, traditional Icelandic geothermal hot tubs, sauna and steambaths, as well as massage and wellness treatments.
