Bhutan fans, rejoice. Pemako Hotels has launched as Bhutan’s first locally owned and managed luxury hotel brand, introducing two distinctive properties: a riverside tented villa retreat in Punakha and a fortress-style hotel in the capital, Thimphu. The brand’s name, Pemako—meaning “hidden lotus-shaped land”—reflects its roots in Bhutanese culture and its aim to offer design-led stays grounded in place.

In Punakha, the flagship property features 21 luxury tented villas set across 60 acres along the Mo Chhu River. Designed by architect Bill Bensley, the villas include Bhutan’s first temperature-controlled private pools, expansive decks and décor highlighting regional crafts. Guests can access the resort via a short boat ride after crossing a prayer-flagged footbridge and once there, they can choose from activities including guided meditation, yoga, white-water rafting and traditional spa treatments by Dungtshos—traditional Bhutanese doctors.

In Thimphu, Pemako’s urban counterpart sits in the city centre with views over the Wang Chhu River and surrounding hillsides. The 66-room hotel is styled after a traditional Dzong (fortress), blending classic Bhutanese design with modern comforts. Suites offer views of landmarks such as the Tashichho Dzong and the Great Buddha Dordenma.

Culinary offerings span authentic Bhutanese cuisine at Alchemy House and all-day international dining at Soma. Other restaurants include Ara, Chig Ja Gye, Rimps and The Thongsel, while cultural experiences and performances offer further insight into Bhutan’s traditions. Both properties are designed to foster reflection, rootedness and cultural engagement within a luxurious setting.
