Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld is no stranger to hotel design. Shortly after inking a deal to revamp suites at the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, Lagerfeld has now paired with a Macanese hospitality firm for a more holistic hotel project.
The 270-room “Karl Lagerfeld Hotel” is scheduled for a 2017 opening, within the densely populated enclave's 20-story Lisboa Palace.
"An entire hotel designed by me - it's the first time for me. I think the idea is great," he said in a statement.
The 80-year-old German designer is in league with Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM) for the project. The firm was founded by hospitality tycoon Stanley Ho, who once held a monopoly on the island – the only territory in China where gambling is legal.
Casino revenues in Macau surpassed US $38 billion last year, which is six times the revenue seen on the Las Vegas Strip.
Lagerfeld has basked in the spotlight in recent weeks following his edgy Chanel Shopping Center exhibition at Paris Fashion Week.
SJM has wider plans for an entire complex in Macua's Cotai neighbourhood, which will result in 2,000 new hotel rooms on the island, as well as a number of new Michelin-starred restaurants and themed retail spaces.
The Lisboa Palace tower will also house the upcoming Versace hotel. Also boasting 270 rooms, the resort will complement the island’s eight Versace stores.
