Stretching more than a thousand miles across southwest China, Tea Horse Road is one of the oldest trade routes in the world. Dotting this sublime landscape, the collection of boutique lodges that make up LUX* Tea Horse Road provide a gateway to ancient monasteries, snow-capped peaks and some of the most dramatic hiking trails in the world.
LUX* Tea Horse Road Shangri-La is the latest addition to the seven-property collection. Perched at a lofty 3,300 metres above sea level on the slopes of Little Turtle Mountain, the hotel was designed by award-winning Yunnan designer Li Zhong, who also created the LUX* Tea Horse Road lodges in Lijang and Benzilan.
The 18 rooms and suites are designed with natural woods and sustainable materials like bamboo and corn husk and adorned with traditional Tibetan handicrafts. The jewel in the crown is the 95sqm LUX* Suite, which is home to a separate living area and private balcony overlooking the rooftops of Dukezong, the Big Buddha Temple and a giant Prayer Wheel. The suite can be connected to two Deluxe Rooms to create a 200-sqm three-bedroom Executive Suite, the perfect abode for multi-generational groups or larger families.
All the rooms are fitted out with modern technology including advanced oxygen systems to combat the effects of altitude, and a dual air-conditioning and underfloor heating system to ensure a comfortable climate all year round.
The hotel’s signature Collectable Experiences include a chance to learn about Tibetan Buddhism from monks in the local monastery, trek along ancient horse caravan paths, discover historic sights and meet local artists and craftsmen. The LUX* team can help plan a bespoke journey along Tea Horse Road, staying at selected properties based on the interests of each traveller, from cultural immersion to active experiences.
