BMW has expanded a recall to many of its most popular models over fears that airbag inflators could rupture once deployed.
Though the German marque said it has received no reports of problems, dealers are set to replace passenger-side front air bags for 1.6 million 3-Series cars from 2000 to 2006, across the world.
BMW’s airbag inflators are part of a system manufactured by Takata Corp. The fear is that the airbags may not work properly and could cause injury through the emission of shards, AP has reported.
The firm explained the precaution earlier this week, stating that other automakers using similar systems from Takata have reported problems.
The recall is an extension of last year's recall of 240,000 cars globally for the same issue. Vehicles made by Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda have also been recalled, among others. General Motors will also recall 30,000 Chevrolet Cruzes because of the alleged faults.
Takata Corp told Associated Press it expects a US $444.80 million loss related to the ongoing problems.
