A vintage 1960s Ferrari has become the most expensive car in the world this week after selling to a private buyer for an incredible US $52 million.
The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO is one of only 39 in existence and boasts an impressive competition history, including a win at the 1963 Tour de France road race, where it was driven by sports car legend Jean Guichet.
The unidentified buyer paid US $17 million more than the previous world record sale, which stood at US $35 million for a limited edition 1962 Ferrari GTO 250 racer, made for Stirling Moss.

“Today the GTO is considered the top car to own … it’s like the Mona Lisa. It has a mystique. If you have a GTO, you have a great collection,” Don Williams of Blackhawk Collection told Bloomberg.
The value of classic cars, especially 1960s Ferraris, has skyrocketed over the last 12 months as an increasing number of affluent enthusiasts have begun to invest in vintage vehicle collections.
Back in August, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spyder sold at auction for US $27.5 million, making it the most expensive public car sale in the world, and James Bond’s submersible Lotus Esprit fetched nearly US $1 million just last month.
