No sooner had COMO Cocoa Island Maldives opened its doors after a major makeover back in January than the Covid-19 pandemic put an abrupt halt to international travel. Reopening this month after its six-month sabbatical, the resort is able to showcase its new-look overwater villas and suites; 34 gorgeous abodes, many of which have been remodelled in the style of the Maldives’ traditional dhoni fishing boats.

Finished in a bright white palette with navy and aqua accents, dark teak floors and white panelled walls, the airy villas feature high, steepled ceilings lined with woven rattan and antique-style ceiling fans, Kajan thatched roofs and outdoor terraces with direct access to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The larger One-Bedroom Water Villas and COMO Water Villas each have their own private pool and spacious outdoor sun decks perched on the edge of the house reef, looking out across the South Male Atoll, and feature bathrooms with marine-coloured mosaics and freestanding bathtubs.

The island’s COMO Shambhala Retreat has also been expanded and remodelled, with a new Pilates Studio, lagoon-side yoga pavilion and hydrotherapy pool, as well as four treatment rooms where full- and half-day treatment paths can be enjoyed without having to change rooms. The wellness journey continues at Ufaa, where nutritious COMO Shambhala Cuisine helps to restore balance and vitality, before sunset libations with toes in the sand at laid-back Faru Bar.
