The Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa in New York state has made quite a name for itself over the years as a go-to wedding venue, but you could now find yourself celebrating on its grounds for quite the opposite reason.
For US $5,000, the hotel is allowing guests to end their marriage over the course of a luxurious weekend break, with access to the resort’s spa, tennis courts, swimming area, golf courses and, of course, on-site lawyer.
As part of the fee, divorcing couples are put up in separate rooms at the hotel and work with a mediator to finalise the details of their signed agreement, before the documents are sent to a judge and made official.
Although most divorces will be conducted in private, some participants have already agreed to partake in a reality TV show focused on the unusual method of marriage termination.
“From our point of view, these are more guests with a specific need, and we have an opportunity to help them to fill that need,” Rob Sgarlata, spokesperson for Gideon Putnam Resort & Spa, told New York Post.
“We don’t see it as different from any of our other groups.”
Jim Halfens, founder of the divorce package concept, has been running a similar service in his native Netherlands for years and expects the service to appeal to busy New York citizens looking for a quick, clean split.
The ‘divorce hotel’ service will be available later this month.
