The art world is heating up just in time for spring, so we’ve rounded up the top five international cultural events to occur in the month of March. Beyond the showcasing of art, jewellery, and music, these influential exhibitions are the spaces where new luxury trends emerge and flourish. Whether it’s a fusion of technology and culture down South in the States, or an Asian art invasion: it’s time to mark the calendar and get ready to getaway.
1. SXSW
March 13-22, Austin, Texas, USA
What began as a festival for emerging artists and technology enthusiasts, has morphed into the top event in North American for all things culture: Interactive, Film, and Music make up the three parts of the South by Southwest festival spanning nine days in the vibrant city of Austin. Exclusive film premiers, live concerts, and key notes speakers from the most influential tech start-ups in the world are all to be expected.
2. Art Basel Hong Kong
March 15–17, Hong Kong, China
The gateway between East and West, Hong Kong boasts a very dynamic arts scene. This festival will incorporate public exhibitions, gallery open days and after-dark events that showcase the works of local and globally renowned artists.
3. Baselworld
March 19 to March 26, Basel, Switzerland
Covet the world’s most impressive timepieces and exquisite jewellery at this globally renowned showcase of brands from more than 45 countries. With your days spent admiring precious jewels and limited-edition timepieces that define the next era in haute horologie, visit the bars and restaurants of Baselworld Village for a chance to network with top industry execs and enthusiasts.
4. Dubai World Cup
March 28, Dubai, UAE
The only place to see one of the world’s richest horse races is from the luxe hospitality suites or the Parade Ring at Meydan Racecourse. The only thing upstaging the horses are the incredible fashions on the field. The after-party at XL Beach Club at Habtoor Beach Resort & Spa will be a particularly memorable event this year as it marks the 20th anniversary of the racing carnival.
5. Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour
March 27 to April 26, Sydney, Australia
Don’t be put off if opera isn’t your cup of tea — this event appeals to novices as well as enthusiasts, not least for the spectacle of enjoying music under the stars on a balmy autumn evening, with the twinkling lights of Sydney Harbour in front. This year, Verdi’s Aida will take to the floating stage in a month-long run.
