Singaporean taxi driver Sia Ka Tian, 70, was shocked to find SGD $1.1 million (US$900,000) in a black paper bag on the back seat of his cab after dropping off a vacationing Thai couple at a shopping mall.
“When I saw the money, I though, trouble is here. I was sure there was at least $200,000 in the bag,” Tian told Singapore Daily Straits Times.
When he brought the money to the lost and found office of transport company ComfortDelGro, he was shocked to learn the actual sum of the money was much greater than he had anticipated.
“The money in unimportant to me. It doesn’t belong to me, so how can I use it?” said Tian, who has been working as a taxi driver for the last 31 years.
He was given an undisclosed cash reward from the grateful couple when they came to the transport office to collect the missing bag. The transport company also plans to give him an award for his good deed.
“We are immensely proud of him and are glad that the passengers recovered their money,” ComfortDelGro spokeswoman Tammy Tan told AFP.
In 2009, another of the company’s taxi drivers returned five kilograms of gold bars worth US $308,000.
