The largest white truffle ever found was purchased in New York this week.
The 1.8 kg fungus fetched $61,250 at Sotheby's in New York after being discovered just one week prior in the Umbrian region of central Italy.
The tuber was offered to the auction house by the Balestra family of Sabatino Truffles, who will donate proceeds to a number of charities, including Citymeals-on-Wheels and the Children's Glaucoma Foundation.
The buyer was a described by Sotheby’s as a “food and wine lover” from Taiwan who placed his winning bid over the phone.
