The Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, opened last week in London’s tallest skyscraper, but it soon became apparent there was a major privacy flaw.
Glass panels fitted to the hotel rooms behaved like angled mirrors once lights were turned on at night – offering guests a peek into adjacent rooms.
The ceiling-to-floor windows are still in place, but the hotel is now offering blinds in order to ensure privacy for guests.
The quirky reflection only happens in a limited number of rooms, according to Darren Gearing, the executive vice president and hotel general manager, who added that blinds were initially installed so that guests were not awoken at dawn.
One guest, David Enrich, posted a picture on Twitter that demonstrated the awkward effect.
DOTW News has contacted the hotel in order to determine if or when the fault will be amended.
THE HOTEL
The long-awaited Shangri-La Hotel opened its reservation lines back in March, readying for an early May opening. The 202 rooms and suites, all situated between levels 36 and 50, are accessible via a high speed elevator from the hotel’s own entrance on St. Thomas Street.
The lobby and its lounge stay delicately epitomise Shangri-La’s beloved artistic charm, while modern and classic art is also curated into the mix. All suites boast floor‑to‑ceiling windows and unrivalled views across the UK capital - and the marble bathrooms offer heated floors and standalone bathtubs.

Three primary eateries put the “high” in high-end, particularly with Gŏng opening on level 52 – becoming London’s highest champagne and cocktail bar. Signature restaurant Ting serves up local produce infused with Asian flavours on the 35th floor, with an abundance of eastern specialties and afternoon teas on offer.
Meanwhile the artisan deli Láng presents patisseries and lighter fare – the ground floor establishment will also showcase cakes and savoury goods for the city slickers frequenting The Shard. The lofty level 52 will also be home to a well-equipped 24-hour gym together with London’s highest infinity pool, which will open in July.
