The world was a slightly different place in 1999. There was a sense of hope for the new millennium, paired with anxiety for all the uncertainty it would bring. But before we began clearing our throats to cheer in the year 2000, Dubai’s most iconic address was being christened.
The Burj Al Arab is the flagship property of Jumeirah and boasts seven-star luxury. Now, the hotel is preparing to begin a whole year of special celebrations to mark its 15-year milestone.
The hotel first opened its doors December 1, 1999, but it has entered its mid-teens as the city around it has evolved into a major luxury destination. Its famous helipad has been graced by tennis stars, sports cars and all manner of publicity stunts, ensuring thrilling memories for guests and locals alike.
The 15th anniversary celebration
The series of special commemorations will begin December 1, 2014, with a fireworks show and 3D mapping projection on the property’s main façade, depecting some of its highlights. The hotel has also collaborated with Hermès to design exquisite limited edition gifts that relate to the hotel's story so far.
Celebrations will continue throughout 2015 with the Best of the Burj package, which offers the hotel’s top experiences. The deal will include a Rolls-Royce Phantom pick-up, a luxurious suite, six-course degustation dinner and signature spa experience.
"The Burj" will also partner with Make-a-Wish Foundation and has announced it will grant 15 wishes to children who have dreamt of experiencing the hotel.
The history of the Burj Al Arab
Architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins took on the challenge of creating this groundbreaking superstructure in 1993. From the project's inception, Burj Al Arab was designated to become an icon of Dubai.
Construction began in 1994 and involved 3000 companies and contractors; 250 designers from the UK, USA and Dubai; and 3500 workmen on site at any given time. It took two years to reclaim the island in the shore waters of the Arabian Gulf, and a further three years to erect the landmark.
