While Britain’s stoic boy racer Lewis Hamilton currently leads the pack in the 2015 Formula One (F1) Grand Prix season, he’s way behind the ice cold German legend Michael Schumacher when it comes to earnings.
That’s according to finance analyst Wealth-X, who has just released a new report on F1 earnings. The group has named the top 10 richest race car drivers of all time – including active and retired drivers.
“Schumie”, the seven-time world champion, has an estimated net worth of US $780 million and is still battling a devastated brain injury from a skiing accident in the French Alps in 2013. He last raced for Mercedes in 2012 but is best known for sitting behind the wheel for Scuderia Ferrari.
The German’s wealth represents 43 per cent of the combined net worth of all 10 men on the list – four of whom have retired from the sport.
Reigning champ Lewis Hamilton, who has now tallied three wins within the 2015 season’s first five races, came in fifth place on the Wealth-X list with a personal fortune of $110 million.
Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who finished second in last year’s world championship standings as well as in the recent Australian Grand Prix, took 10th place on the Wealth-X list with $30 million in assets.
The list has an age swing of 33 years, with 27-year-old Sebastien Vettel netting $45 million and 60-year-old retired Frenchman Alain Prost, amassing $70 million during his career.
