Set on the banks of the River Tâmega in Portugal’s Douro Valley, Palácio de Canavezes has been welcoming health-conscious guests since the 1900s. Even before the pioneering medical escape first opened its doors, visitors flocked to the region to enjoy the medicinal properties of hot springs and thermal waters, following in the footsteps of the Portuguese royal family, who had been visiting the area since the 12th-Century.
Now, Scottish hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray has stepped in to breathe new life into the century-old property, which is set to become the newest addition to Campbell Gray Hotels. As well as 52 rooms and suites overlooking the Tâmega, imagined by Portuguese interior designer Paulo Lobo, the hotel will be home to PUREGRAY thermal spa and wellness facilities, with treatment rooms and a hammam built into the rockface, as well as an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room.
Wellbeing will be infused in all aspects of the hotel experience, from medical consultations and bespoke wellness programmes, to nutritious menus featuring regional produce at the riverside restaurant and terrace. Forty minutes from Porto Airport, Palácio de Canavezes will join Le Gray in Beirut, The Merchant House in Bahrain and The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links in Scotland as the fourth member of the group when it opens in early 2021.
