The Frank Gehry-designed art museum and cultural centre has opened the doors to its first-ever exhibition.
An artist known as the “Philosopher of Spectacle”, Olafur Eliasson, will be kicking off proceedings, after gaining recognition as a world leader in sculpture and large-scale installations.
The exhibition, “Contact”, is said to envelope visitors in a choreography of moving light and shadows, seemingly transporting them into the darkness of outer space.
On the roof, Olafur Eliasson will install an apparatus that tracks the sun and, at certain hours of the day, directs light rays onto a multifaceted, geometric sculpture suspended within the building.
Eliasson’s work will also permanently featured in the museum’s "grotto" - a forest of mirrored yellow columns, which “cast a sunny glow and infinite repetitions of passers-by,” according to a description offered by the Fondation.
We previewed the museum back in June, ahead of the opening date, which was expected to be late October, 2014. The exhibition opened December 17 and will run until February 16, 2015.
