When it comes to decadent rail journeys, there are few countries that do it better than Japan. From the aptly-named Sweets Train in Nagasaki (which offers sweet-toothed travellers a dizzying range of locally made confectionaries) to the ultra-luxury Seven Stars in Kyushi, the East Asian archipelago is no stranger to pricey rail travel, and the latest track-based offering from the West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) has the potential to be the priciest of the lot.
Scheduled for a Spring 2017 introduction, the luxury sleeper train is still in its design phase, but is expected to take passengers on a journey through some of Japan’s most picturesque, rural areas in the Keihanshin region of the country upon completion. Although prices are yet to be announced, it is thought that the cost of a trip on the sleeper train will rival that of Seven Stars in Kyushi, which charges 13 million yen (US $11,400) per couple for a three-night itinerary.
