The three metre long ONYX sofa is the first in a line of made-to-measure furniture from Peugeot Design Lab, and it certainly sets the bar high in terms of interesting materials.
The carbon fibre and Volvic volcanic lava stone but me similar shades of dark grey, but starkly contrast one another with finish and texture.
Separated by a sharp straight cut, the 11,000-year-old Volvic stone has been carved by hand and affixed to the sleek carbon fibre section of the bench-like sofa – the volcanic rock having previously spent thousands of years filtering water in an aquifer.
“This project was started in May 2013. From the beginning we had a very raw, very powerful sketch,” said Cathal Loughnane, head of Peugeot Design Lab.
“The ONYX sofa is an illustration of a new concept that we intend to explore unique pieces of furniture, made to measure, to suit the choice, origin and personality of the customer, but which always respects a common idea; the union… People grow tired of things very quickly, we want new and disposable objects,” he continued
“We want to offer technological furniture that remains respectful of nature’s materials and the ancestral craftsman’s skills, a balanced marriage between performance and responsibility.”
Peugeot will premiere the ONYX sofa at Milan Design Week, which runs April 8 to 13. The 363KG seat took approximately 70 days to make and was priced at around $185,585.
