Late last year, anonymous graffiti artist Banksy performed a stunt in which a selection of his valuable paintings went on sale at an unmarked market stall in Central Park (video below). Priced at $60 a piece, the unknown vendor was widely ignored by the passing public, achieving just eight sales to three buyers throughout the day.
One of these lucky purchasers is now celebrating in style after putting her bargain-buys up for sale at a London auction house. The two paintings, bought for $120 in total, fetched a combined GBP 124,750 (US $214,000) at the Bonhams sale last week – GBP 68,500 for Kids with Guns and GBP 56,250 for Winnie the Pooh respectively.
It is thought that the other buyers have not yet sold their pieces, one of whom bought four large canvases thought to be worth in excess of a million dollars. According to the official Banksy video, a man who just needed “something for the walls” of his new home bought these four paintings.
Banksy’s controversial stance on commercial capitalism is no secret. Alongside the Central Park stunt, the artist’s month-long visit to New York in 2013 saw the painter create an artwork a day around the city, satirising everyone from the police to the media.
It has recently been announced that two of Banksy’s Better Out Than In artworks will go on sale at the Art Miami fair. They are expected to fetch upwards of US $800,000 a piece.
